GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) are the two most recognized diamond grading authorities in the world. However, they serve slightly different functions in the B2B loose diamond marketplace.
The GIA is widely considered the pioneer of the 4Cs and is noted for its highly conservative grading standards on color and clarity. Most large loose center stones (0.50ct and up) are certified by the GIA to command maximum asset value.
The IGI is highly efficient for certified layouts, jewelry mount authentication, and fancy cuts. IGI certificates are highly cost-effective and provide rapid turnarounds, which is ideal for bulk jewelry manufacturing and calibrated side-stone parcels.
